Fall Colors

We hope you have been enjoying the dry, sunny fall weather as much as we have!

The ewes and lambs, below, are in the same place on the farm today as they were for the August newsletter. Their pasture rotation is about 60 days right now. There isn't as much grass here as there was last time, but the quality is really good.

Next week we will move the lambs into the barn for the winter. I'll also pick out our best 65 ewes to breed for a March lambing season. To be one of the best ewes, you have to be in good condition and shed your wool. Our shaggier ewes, who don't shed as well, will go into the later breeding group.

We ran out of daylight for taking pictures, so these next few cow photos are from last month. This our group of yearlings that will be processed in 2027. They are all huddled together, waiting to be moved to their next meal.

Here I am rolling up a single-strand fence with a reel to let the yearlings into the next paddock. For a short move like this one, their blue water tub can be easily dragged under the fence.

It is nice to be able to feed the cows on foot, without bringing the tractor or any extra equipment out to the field. With the grazing season winding down, we'll begin feeding hay and baleage this month to supplement the remaining grass.

Thanks for reading,

Leith, Mary Kate, Norah & Edith MacKenzie
